THE FIG FARM

Aliyaa’s father is a passionate collector – first Persan rugs, brought from travels around the world, then figs.
It’s in Saudi Arabia that he first tasted this fruit, one of the oldest in the world it is said, originating from Syria, Afghanistan and Mediterranean countries. The Dukes of Tuscany or the Kings – Louis XIV, to name one – served these colourful clusters of green, red, purple fruit on fruit platters at their court.
Returning home, he planted a fig tree, then another and the garden slowly extended to 2 hectares of greenhouses. These are now home to no less than 400 species, growing there all year round. The family – all architects – joined him in cultivating this land, reclaimed by nature in a street of Shah Alam. The sweet treat, which fleshy pulp contains hundreds of achenes, is also used to make sumptuous jams, teas and even beauty products.
